Our Jobs

Transport planning is undergoing a revolution, and the Midlands is at its heart. Join us and help shape our next regional transport strategy.

At Midlands Connect, we think differently. We’re looking for enthusiastic and creative transport planners and economists to join our ambitious team as we take the Midlands’ transport priorities into the next decade.

As the Sub-National Transport Body (STB) for the Midlands, we are developing the next regional plan which aims to boost economic growth for our population of more than ten million, whilst at the same time reducing transport’s part in the climate emergency.  We are growing our team as we put ourselves at the forefront of solving this industry-defining question.

With only seven STBs across the whole of England, this is a rare opportunity to have a leading role in the development of the next regional transport strategy.

We have six important roles for candidates who are up for the challenge:

Lead Economist

c. £60,000

You will lead on the development of all our economic evidence and narrative, to support the strategy and its component parts.  Your job will be to quantify and articulate the benefits of our strategy and projects to a wide audience. Ideally, in addition to experience in transport economics and modelling, you will also have broad appreciation of the role transport plays in the wider economy.

Major and Strategic Roads Programme Manager

£51,379 - £57,821

STBs have a specific role to play in the national planning for the Strategic Road Network and newly defined Major Road Network, as we identify the highest priority locations for future significant investment in road infrastructure.  You will work with our local highway authority partners to understand their needs and help them develop compelling business cases for Major Road Network (MRN) and Large Local Major (LLM) scheme investment.  You will also work closely with Highways England as part of the Road Investment Strategy (RIS) process; ensuring that they understand what our priorities are.

Principal Transport Planner x 2

£39,378 – £44,137

These are varied roles, giving you the opportunity to lead on specific strands of work that feed into and come out of our next regional transport strategy, working with the Midlands Connect team as well as consultancy partners.  You could be working on strategic studies, scheme business cases, road projects, rail projects, smart technology, policy and research pieces.

Principal Data Analyst

£37,109 – £41,770

At Midlands Connect we are evidence led.  As such we gather and analyse a huge amount of data, from a variety of sources, including transport model outputs, economic data, transport trends, mobile phone data, environmental data and land use planning.   You will work right across the technical team, ensuring that our projects have a sound evidence base.  There will also be opportunities to lead on your own projects or areas of research.

Assistant Transport Planner

£25,811 - £30,191

This is an opportunity for someone early in their transport planning career to gain experience in regional policy making, strategy development and a range of transport planning disciplines.  With an understanding of the fundamentals of transport planning, you will be able to write a good report, know your way round a spreadsheet and most importantly enthusiasm to get involved in everything that we do.  We’ll teach you the rest.
