Research by Midlands Connect shows eight out of 10 people recognise upgrades to the A38 Derby junctions would help the local economy.

Consumer research carried out for Midlands Connect by Censuswide, shows that 83% of respondents appreciate these road improvements are important to improving the local economy.

The survey of 500 people living within a five-mile radius of the Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton, roundabouts showed 71% support upgrade proposals to build two new bridges, and lower and widen parts of the A38 to ease congestion.

The A38 is an important route from Birmingham to Derby and through to the M1 at Junction 28.

As it passes through Derby, it merges the long-distance traffic with large volume of vehicles making local journeys, causing congestion and delays.

Upgrades will also benefit people in the area by maintaining existing facilities and providing new means for cyclists, pedestrians and disabled users to cross the road.

Maria Machancoses, CEO of Midlands Connect, said:

“Upgrading these junctions gives an opportunity to boost regional development and grow the economy of Derby city and its surrounding areas.

“This scheme will also help improve road safety and meet the needs of future traffic growth. Upgrading the infrastructure is key to unlocking the full potential of the area, and it is a critical step for the wider region."

The survey also showed 71% of participants agreed congestion is holding back development and investment in the area.

People sharing their views, said they would expect to see better traffic flows in the surrounding areas as a result of the upgrades, and they hope the decreasing congestion will minimise the environmental impacts of the road and boost the local economy.

Richard Blackmore, East Midlands Chamber Director of Policy and Insight, said:

"Being a critical link between Derby, the M1 and the West Midlands, any measures that ease delays and sluggish journeys on that stretch of the A38 will be of benefit to the many people that use that route.

"If improvements go ahead and attract investment in the surrounding area that’s something I’d welcome.”
