A1 corridor
The A1 corridor is a nationally significant strategic north-south corridor, linking London and the South East to East Anglia, the East Midlands and the North. The corridor is vital to the economy of the Midlands as it provides the closest connection to the Strategic Road Network for the important the agri-food industry, logistics businesses and tourism on the east coast.
What is the scheme?
We're working on a long-term, corridor approach to improving the A1 between Peterborough and Blyth. We undertook a study in 2019/20, in partnership with England’s Economic Heartlands, to explore the strategic and economic narrative of the route, and opportunities related to enhancing safety and reliability. We have produced a coherent strategy for the A1 corridor, which takes a corridor-wide (national) perspective, including the interaction between the A1/A1(M)/M11 and the M1 corridors.
Interventions along the corridor could:
- Improve journey times and reliability.
- Address and improve inconsistent route standards.
- Enhance safety.
- Reduce severance of local communities.
- Increase east-east connectivity.
What happens next?
We are continuing to work with partners to identify how we can support short term aspirations to enhance safety and understanding the opportunities around longer-term strategic interventions to support growth and national connectivity.
